Bearing the weight of the celestial sphere, ATLAS was a Titan in Greek mythology. Known for his stoicism and incredible strength, Atlas was condemned to hold up the sky for eternity by Zeus.
The term ‘atlas’ in cartography (map-making) comes from the mythical Titan, as he was depicted bearing the globe upon his shoulders.
We’ve recreated ATLAS in Sterling Silver, with an Australian Opal or Shattuckite Gemstone representing the Earth. We carved an atlas of the globe onto the reverse of the gemstone.
Shattuckite is a gemstone consisting of copper and silicate, mined in the Shattuck Mine in Arizona, hence its name. The copper gives it a distinctive blue colour, and we felt it symbolised the sea-green tones of our planet.
